Getting started
What's a bin? Granary's version of a cash envelope: a place for money with one job, like groceries, rent or fun money. You give each bin a monthly amount. When a bin is empty, that's your limit for the month.
Bins or Ledger? The Bins view shows big, colorful bins with what's left in each. The Ledger view shows every bin with exact figures, a register with a running balance on each bin, and the monthly report as a table. Switch any time in Settings › View; on a Mac, the toolbar has the switch. Each person and device keeps their own choice.
Income. Settings › Income. Add each paycheck (both partners' pay, a side job). For weekly or every-2-weeks pay, set your next payday. Granary shows how much is still to assign.
Changing an amount. A bin's new monthly amount applies from this month on. Earlier months keep the amounts they had, so past reports don't change.
Logging a purchase
Tap Log Spending, enter the amount and pick a bin. Granary suggests the bin you used for that store before.
In the Ledger view you can type one line instead: 23.75 dining pho logs $23.75 from Dining out with the note "pho". Start with + for money in: +20 refund groceries.
Split a purchase. Type the total, then tap Split Across Bins and add the other bins with their amounts. The bin you chose keeps whatever is left over. Each bin gets its own entry with the same note and date.
Other ways to log: a widget, Control Center, the Mac menu bar, or Siri ("Log spending in Granary").
One-tap quick log
- Control Center: add the Quick Log control, choose a bin and an amount (say $5 in Coffee). Each tap logs it without opening Granary.
- One Bin widget: edit the widget and set Quick Log Amount. A button such as +$5 appears on the widget.
Log Apple Pay automatically
Granary can log every Apple Pay purchase for you, without a bank login. In Granary, see Settings › Your data › Log Apple Pay Automatically, or set it up in Shortcuts:
- Open Shortcuts, tap Automation, then +.
- Choose Transaction, pick your cards, and choose Run Immediately.
- Tap New Blank Automation and add Granary's Log a Card Purchase action.
- Set Amount to the transaction's Amount and Store to its Merchant.
- Optional: pick a Bin If Unsure for stores Granary hasn't seen before.
Granary puts each purchase in the bin you used for that store before, or asks Apple Intelligence on your iPhone. Nothing leaves your device. If you also import from Apple Card, purchases already logged this way are skipped.
Apple Watch
Install Granary on your watch from the Watch app on your iPhone. The watch shows what's left this month and in each bin. Tap a bin, type the amount and tap Log.
Add the What's Left complication to a watch face for your total and daily amount at a glance. With Hide Widget Amounts or the app lock on, the complication hides amounts while your watch is locked.
Purchases logged on the watch count straight away, even when your iPhone isn't nearby, and are saved to your budget the next time it's in reach.
Money in, moves and repeating items
- Money in (a refund, a gift, a paycheck into one bin): Log Spending › Money in.
- Move money between bins: touch and hold a bin › Move Money Here.
- Repeating items (rent, subscriptions): Settings › Repeating. Choose weekly, every 2 weeks, monthly (including the last day of the month) or yearly, and whether Granary logs it for you or just reminds you.
Importing from another app
Settings › Your data › Import CSV, or choose "Import from another app" when you start. Export a CSV from YNAB, Goodbudget, Monarch, your bank or a spreadsheet. Each category becomes a bin, starting with your average monthly spending. You review every entry before anything is added, and you can undo the import afterward.
Want to try it first? Download the sample file.
Apple Card Plus On iPhone, Settings › Your data › Import from Apple Card brings in Apple Card, Apple Cash and Savings transactions for you to review.
Sharing and sync
Sharing with a partner Plus
Settings › Sharing › Share Budget. Your partner opens the invitation on their iPhone, iPad or Mac and joins free, with Plus features in your shared budget. Only the people you invite can join. Each entry shows who logged it.
Joining on a new device? Open the invitation on that device. If you already use Granary on another device with Plus, choose "I use Granary on another device" when you start, and your budget comes from iCloud.
Sync Plus
Your budget syncs through your iCloud account. Settings › Sync shows the status. If you sign out of iCloud, the synced copy is removed from that device until you sign back in; Granary keeps automatic backups you can restore.
Backups
Granary makes a backup every day you use it and before any restore, import, merge or delete: Settings › Your data › Automatic Backups. You can also save a backup file anywhere with Back Up to a File.
Granary Plus
Plus adds partner sharing, sync across your devices, unlimited bins and repeating items, reports, bill reminders, receipt scanning, Apple Card import and CSV export. Manage or cancel in Settings › your name › Subscriptions. If Plus ends, your budget keeps syncing and stays shared.
